Yellowstone Season 6: Everything We Know

Renewal Status

In February 2023, Paramount Network announced that it has renewed the hit drama series Yellowstone for a sixth season ahead of the season 5 premiere. Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family owners of the largest contiguous ranch in the U.S. who are constantly at odds with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park.

Expected Release Date

An official release date for Yellowstone season 6 has not been set yet by Paramount. However, if it follows previous seasons’ schedules, we can likely expect season 6 to premiere in June 2024. The gap between seasons has previously ranged from 10-14 months. Seasons 1-4 spanned approximately one year per season in the show’s timeline.

Potential Storylines

Details are scarce about specific storylines for the upcoming sixth season. However, given the dramatic events in Yellowstone’s shocking season 5 finale, we expect to see the following plot-threads continue:

  • Power struggles and clashes between the Duttons and their rivals now that John Dutton is Governor of Montana
  • Beth and Rip adjusting to married life and potentially starting a family
  • The fate of the Yellowstone ranch itself considering Jamie’s new alliance and adoptive father Garrett Randall’s claim to own it
  • Conflicts arising from Kevin Costner’s John Dutton as Governor of Montana
  • Unresolved drama regarding the jet crash and its investigations
  • Ongoing threats from developer Caroline Warner and Market Equities

Cast Members Expected to Return

As the show’s leading family, we expect to see the return of:

  • Kevin Costner as John Dutton
  • Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton
  • Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton
  • Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton

Additionally, fan-favorite supporting characters likely to come back include:

  • Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler
  • Kelsey Asbille as Monica Long
  • Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton
  • Jefferson White as Jimmy Hurdstrom
  • Forrie J. Smith as Lloyd Pierce
  • Denim Richards as Colby Mayfield
  • Ian Bohen as Ryan

Production Details

Yellowstone films primarily on location in Montana and Utah. Season 6 production dates have not yet been announced but will likely commence in mid-2023 based on past scheduling timelines.

Creator Taylor Sheridan continues to steer the series. Season 6 is expected to run for around 10 episodes, on par with previous seasons of the show. Executives from MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios will also be heavily involved in bringing the sixth season from script to screen.

What Has Been Said About a Sixth Season

Not much beyond the renewal announcement itself. However, Kevin Costner did tell Entertainment Tonight in November 2022 regarding the show’s future: “I’m aware that this horse we’re riding has a lot left.” So it seems Yellowstone still has a long journey ahead through multiple additional seasons.

Co-creator Taylor Sheridan has previously said he originally envisioned Yellowstone as a 10 to 12 season epic drama exploring multiple generations of the Dutton family similar to Dallas or Dynasty. So while an official season 6 renewal is in place for now, fans can likely expect even more seasons to come in the future as that vision is fully brought to life.
