‘1883’ Canceled After Just One Season on Paramount+

YELLOWSTONE PREQUEL WON’T RETURN DESPITE STRONG VIEWERSHIP

The popular new Paramount+ series 1883, a prequel to the hit show Yellowstone, has been canceled after just one season. The show followed the Dutton family as they embarked on a journey westward across the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America in the late 19th century.

YELLOWSTONE PREQUEL WON'T RETURN DESPITE STRONG VIEWERSHIP

1883 debuted in December 2021 and was an instant ratings hit for Paramount+, quickly becoming one of the streaming service’s most-watched series. However, creator Taylor Sheridan had always envisioned it as a limited, one-season event meant to set up the origins of the Duttons and their Montana ranch featured in Yellowstone.

SHERIDAN PLANS TO EXPLORE MORE YELLOWSTONE ORIGIN STORIES

Despite 1883’s popularity and strong viewership, Sheridan confirmed this week that it was always his plan to end the series after just one season. He said, “it was designed to be a limited series.”

However, Sheridan does plan to revisit the Yellowstone origin story concept and highlight other eras of the Dutton family history in potential new limited series. “I created this peek through time to show you this one specific story,” he said. “I’m not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily ever after.”

1883 STARS DISAPPOINTED BUT UNDERSTANDING OF SHOW’S END

The 1883 cast said they were disappointed the show would not have a second season but ultimately understood Sheridan’s choice as the show’s creator. Star Tim McGraw said, “We knew going in that it was a one-year deal. We didn’t know what was going to happen after that,” while his co-star Faith Hill said she was “sad because you fall in love with the character.”

So while the journey has ended for the 1883 iteration of the Dutton family, fans hold out hope Sheridan will pick up the Yellowstone origin story again with another limited prequel series highlighting a different chapter in the lives of John Dutton’s ancestors.

  1. You are a bunch of idiots. This was meant for 1 season. The never was a design for more. It wasn’t cancelled despite good viewership. Renewing something that was intended to end because of good viewership is a sad money grab. Get real and congratulate the process for sticking to their guns.

  2. I think just one season of these shows were a tease…they need to have more….we, the fans WANT and NEED MORE… The way 1923 ended was just rude…leaving us hanging… Does Spencer make it home? Was Alex able to find him?

  3. I think he’s right to do this way. The ending was profound. That their journey had ended in Montana was a blessing in disguise!! I hope that he does at least a couple more!! Definitely the best short series I have ever seen, and I am 75!.
